Quadriplegic sues football club


A Tasmanian football club is being sued after an incident left one of its players a quadriplegic.

Brent Webster was the captain of the Claremont Football Club when he was injured at a best and fairest count (annual end-of-season football awards ceremony) in 2008.

The then 24-year-old broke his neck after allegedly being wrestled to the ground by his team-mate Nathan Brown.

He is suing the club and Mr Brown for negligence, while Mr Brown is also being sued for battery.

Lawyers for Mr Webster claim the club supplied alcohol to a drunk person and failed to take reasonable action to prevent an offence being committed on the premises.

It is alleged the club should have known that Mr Brown had a tendency to become violent when drunk.
