This blog article is way too long to be copied and pasted in its entirety, but it does provide a wealth of information (including links to other articles) about a very disturbing issue.  I highly recommend the article, along with all the comments.

Amazingly, the author of this expose (Jessica Luther) is a sports fan!

I will admit I've only skimmed through this lengthy article, but I have noticed an infuriating trend.  Most of the time, victims of rape by football players have been treated badly.  Most, but not all, of the football coaches cited in the article have had no problem with any of the players they coach committing rape.  Of course, the rape culture also includes many of the fans.  When I was young, the sports media ignored instances of rape by athletes.  Decent people should be sickened by this unjust situation, but they allow themselves to be blinded to the point of mindlessness and insensitivity by the sports culture.  We live in a country that has placed all school athletes on pedestals, regardless of their character.  They are our nobility.  Because of this attitude, a teenager or young man can get away with committing the crime of rape (well, at least most of the time) if he happens to excel at a sport.  Absolutely pathetic!  This attitude is one of the reasons why I'm not a sports fan.

That picture would be funnier if it didn't depict what actually happens...

I posted the following at Democratic Underground.  It's self-explanatory.

Yes, I know this topic is two years old; but the issue is still relevant.

The OP asks someone to explain "the anti-sport sentiment of the left." The reader might believe that this request was an honest attempt to understand the point of view of those who are not sports fans, but the result has been that all critics of sports have been bashed. In other words, the responses have all been self-serving.

The OP is not entirely accurate. Some of the most compelling reasons why some people are bothered by sports aren't even mentioned. There does not seem to have been an honest attempt to understand sports critics. No, instead of being willing to hear a different point of view, you close your minds and bash anyone who refuses to put all athletes on pedestals, regardless of character.

I can't speak for all sports critics, but I can state my own position. First of all, I don't react to all sports in the same way. I have no problem with the Olympics. Since they are not school sports, they have no impact in the lives of students.

I make a distinction between the game and the culture associated with the game. I have no problem with people simply enjoying a game as a spectator or as a participant. Someone like me has no problem with the game. What I object to are the negative aspects of the culture of school sports. Specifically the injustices in the way that other people are treated. Some sports fans are reasonable in this regard, but many clearly are not.

For example, generations of nonathletic boys (and girls as well) have been subjected to bullying (some of it quite severe) in mandatory phys ed classes. If you deny that what I've said is true, just ask some of your fellow DU members. Mandatory P.E. was never about physical fitness. It was only about sports. Many of the coaches had no respect for nonathletic boys; and some joined in with the bullying instead of acting as mature, responsible adults. The physical fitness needs of nonathletic students were completely ignored. In other words, nonathletic students were subjected to discrimination as they were forced to take a class that was completely useless to them and even discouraged them from becoming physically active as adults. In recent years a handful of innovators and reformers have sought to reform P.E. since they realize that historically nonathletic students have been cheated of the benefits of physical exercise. But the old P.E. is still with us.

A number of our fellow DU members were bullied by athletes in school, yet the issue of bullying in school sports is not even mentioned in the OP. Just to give an example, one DU member whose username I won't mention grew up in a small town in Georgia. He attended high school in the early 1960s. He witnessed the hypocrisy of the culture. Cheerleaders impregnated by members of the football team were expelled, but none of the players were ever disciplined for anything wrong they ever did. This DU member was bullied by football players who would shove his head into toilets. Quite understandably, today he's not able to watch any football games on TV. Yet some of you sports fans would fault him for not being a fan and would jeer at him. You call yourselves liberals or progressives, yet you have no sympathy for anyone who was ever bullied by "jocks." Instead, you want them to keep quiet.

The reason why some people are sports critics is because while we recognize there are, for example, football players who are great guys, the fact remains that the sport's culture is based upon unbridled machismo. We observe that boys who have no interest in sports are negatively stereotyped as wimps and are often marginalized and bullied, despite the fact that there have been men of great courage who never had an interest in sports. Raoul Wallenberg, who saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews during WW2, in the words of his half-sister, "detested competitive team sports"; but he certainly was no wimp.

Another reason why some people criticize sports is because sports such as football have given birth to a vicious rape culture. Whatever happened to women's rights? If you don't believe me, the literature is out there. Books have been written. One of the most prominent of these writers is a sportswriter! A young woman who has been raped or gang-raped by football players has the scales of justice tilted against her. First, she suffers what is usually a gang rape. Then if she seeks to press charges, she is victimized again by sports fans who harass her. Sometimes she receives death threats. Anyone who is not touched by the plight of these victims as they suffer mental problems for years has a heart of stone. Sadly, that is, in fact, true of some sports fans. I know for a fact that some sports fans even recognize that one or more players on their favorite team are rapists, but they don't care! Again, the OP does not mention the rape culture.

Many of you sports fans have a double standard. (I'm speaking of the unreasonable ones as opposed to those who are decent and reasonable, such as trumad.) If an athlete does a good deed, you want everyone to hear about it. But when an athlete such as a football player brutalizes another human being, you don't want to hear about it; and you have absolutely no sympathy for the victim, whom you sometimes even slander. The minority of school athletes who bully or rape are often given a pass. (Does this "build character"?) You have no sympathy for victims of bullying and rape when the perpetrators are athletes, yet you still call yourselves liberals or progressives. What you are really doing is aping the right-wingers who seek to preserve the privilege of powerful people who abuse others.

I could say even more, but this is enough. I've just contributed what was sorely missing from this topic. Please notice I've not made any dumb "bread and circuses" comment.

I won't check on this topic again. I'm tired of trying to reason with unreasonable people. It's a waste of time. It's like pounding your head against the proverbial brick wall.
